IS MALTOSE GOOD FOR YOU?

Since I have started writing blogs about Malt, many people have asked me whether maltose is good for health or not.

So today I will try to answer this question of yours. Well there are not much research that has taken place about the health effects of maltose in the diet.

So before moving further, let me first help you understand the meaning of maltose:

Maltose basically is made up of two alpha D glucose units which are linked with an alpha 1,4 glycosidic bond. In the small intestinal lining in humans, the enzyme maltase and isomaltase break down the molecules of maltose into two glucose molecules, which is then absorbed by the body.

Maltose is usually compared with table sugar when it comes to its consumption and health benefits. From the point of view of usage - people usually go for table sugar which is also known as  sucrose and is commonly used in cooking and

sweetening foods. From the viewpoint of health benefits, table sugar lies somewhere in between those of glucose and fructose. Fructose is not considered very healthy as it has rather severe health implications and Consuming a high-

fructose diet may cause a quicker onset of obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes.

But if we look at maltose from the health point of view, it is made up of just glucose which ultimately means, it is way more healthier than table sugar.

Now since maltose is broken down into glucose when digested, its health effects are probably similar to other sources of glucose. The brain gets its energy almost exclusively from glucose as our muscles, liver and brain can convert glucose into energy.  Once it goes at par with the energy requirement of your body, any remaining glucose in your bloodstream is converted into lipids and stored as fat.

But still, as you all know the rule - Excess of Everything is Bad. The same rule applies here too. The excess of it can cause obesity, diabetes and heart and kidney disease, just like other sugars .

Maltose is less sweet than table sugar and is used in hard candy and frozen desserts because of its unique tolerance to heat and cold. Use of maltose acts as a sweetener and helps you reduce added sugars in your diet. Also, while they do contain small amounts of sugar, they also offer additional nutrients like fibre, vitamins and antioxidants.

Not only this, Since people are shifting towards health conscious products, maltose is a perfect product to go with the new trend. Most of the food companies are also shifting towards maltose or no fructose product.

MALT POWDER vs. MALTED MILK POWDER

Today’s question for you is whether there is difference between Malted milk powder and malt powder? Do you know the answer? If no, then we will tell you that the answer is YES, they are definitely different from each other.   Malt Powder is made from wheat flour and another grain, usually barley. On the other hand, malted milk powder is malt powder with milk solids added to it.

Malt Powder

Malt powder provided by the best malt extract suppliers, Barley Malt suppliers - Mahalaxmi Malt Extract- is basically available in the form of diastatic malt powder and non-diastatic malt powder in which the former form contains active enzymes that help the starch to get converted into sugar which can accelerate the rising process and make products like bread rise more quickly. The latter one is  Non-diastatic malt that does not contain any active enzymes and is usually available as a syrup. It is only used for that distinctive malty flavour and deep caramel colour.

Going in depth in this product- Malt powder is made from barley grains which have been allowed to sprout, steeped and germinated to ultimately  help the grains to stimulate so that a certain type of enzyme can be released which ultimately breaks down its starches into sugars, creating a sweeter flavour. The grain is then dried and grounded to produce a fine powder.

Malt powder is something that can add a touch and flavour of natural sweetness to your bread, along with a browner crust and a glossy sheen, then malt powder could be that magic ingredient.

Malted Milk Powder

Malted milk powder is a fine light-yellow powder with a mellow, nutty flavour and a sweet and natural essence. The term "malt" refers to a grain (usually barley) that has been sprouted and quickly dried. Malt has many uses, including a base for beer, whiskey, and malt vinegar. Once the grain is ground up, it becomes the base of malted milk powder, which also contains wheat flour and powdered milk. Different brands often add other ingredients, including sugar, flavourings such as chocolate, food colouring, salt, and preservatives. Malted milk powder adds nutty sweetness and a pleasant crunch to candy, such as brittle and malted milk balls.

So, the next time you find yourself enjoying malted milk balls or your morning bagel, you will surely be able to understand the difference between both varieties of malt powder. Contact Mahalaxmi Malt Extract

WHY CONSUME BARLEY at mahalaxmimaltextract.com

Barley is one of the most widely consumed grains because of the versatility of benefits this grain provides. It has a somewhat chewy consistency and a slightly nutty flavour that can complement many dishes.

People can use  the same in bread, beverages, stews, and other dishes. As a wholesome grain, barley provides fibre, vitamins, and minerals.

Consuming a whole grain - rich diet may help reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, certain types of cancer, and other chronic health concerns. Barley is rich in many nutrients and packs some impressive health benefits, ranging from improved digestion and weight loss to lower cholesterol levels and a healthier heart.

Here are some  health benefits of barley:

Rich in Many Beneficial Nutrients

Barley is rich in many beneficial and healthy nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and other plant compounds. There are various forms of barley and almost all of them utilize the whole grain, except for pearl barley, which has been polished to remove some or all of the outer bran layer along with the hull.

It is a particularly rich source of fiber, molybdenum, manganese and selenium - when consumed as a whole grain and also contains good amounts of copper, vitamin B1, chromium, phosphorus, magnesium.

Then again, barley grain if Soaked or sprouted - can improve absorption of these nutrients.

Digestion, weight management, and satiety

Barley can boost your intestinal health and the fiber content present in it  helps prevent constipation and promote regularity for a healthy digestive tract.

Consuming barley - a fiber-rich food - may also contribute to weight loss because it functions as a “bulking agent” in the digestive system, making a person feel fuller for longer which may reduce calorie consumption and promote weight loss.

Beta-Glucans May Help Lower Cholesterol

Barley also helps lower your cholesterol levels as the beta-glucans found in barley have been shown to reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol by binding to bile acids.

In one of the studies, men with high cholesterol were put on a diet rich in whole wheat, brown rice or barley.

And as a result, after five weeks, those given barley reduced their cholesterol levels by 7% more than participants on the other two diets.

That’s why consuming the type of insoluble fiber found in barley helps reduce cholesterol levels by preventing its formation and increasing its excretion through the faeces.

Helps Reduce Heart Disease Risk

Whole grains like barley are consistently linked to better heart health. Therefore, it’s no surprise that regularly adding barley to your diet may lower your risk of heart disease.

May help prevent Cancer

Barley contains selenium whose consumption can help prevent inflammation.

According to the National Cancer Institute, people with some types of chronic inflammation, such as Crohn’s disease, have a higher risk of cancer. This is because persistent inflammation can sometimes trigger the DNA changes that cause cells to divide uncontrollably.

Selenium also acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells against damage caused by molecules called free radicals as this type of damage may increase the risk of cancer.

There are many other benefits of consuming barley may be in any form. We, at Mahalaxmi Malt Extract being one of the best barley provides the top notch quality Barley Malted Milk Food and Barley malt extract liquid in India.

MALT– A COMPLETE NUTRITIONAL INTAKE FOR YOU.

Malted barley flour, referred to as malt flour, is prepared from barley malt that has undergone malting. So basically Malted barley flour is made from barley that is malted , steam-dried, hulled, then ground and sifted. Technically, because it’s malted, it has increased enzyme activity. It contains alpha amylase, which helps to break down complex sugars and starch in the dough to simple sugars such as maltose, making them easier for yeast to feed on.

There are basically two kinds of malted barley flour, diastatic and non-diastatic.

• Diastatic: Whenever people talk about malted barley powder, diastatic is the one that they normally meant. It’s the one that is used for baking and has the active enzymes in it. It neither actually has any real flavour to speak of, so it’s “flavour-neutral”; Nor does it impact colour much. What it does do is give a moister crumb.

• Non-diastatic: This has no active enzymes in it; its job is to provide flavour, in a variety of applications and in baked goods, to give a glossy surface and a soft, fine crumb. This is usually referred to as “Malt Powder.”

Diastatic Malt Flours contain naturally occurring active enzymes that function as natural dough conditioners in yeast fermented dough. It is used for promoting a strong rise, adding a mild natural malt flavor and enhancing appealing crust browning. It is used commercially as a great deal in bread, pizza crusts, crackers, rolls, pretzels etc as a dough conditioner. Because of its lower gluten, it causes the dough to be softer, more relaxed and gives a softer crumb texture. Malted barley is a natural humectant that helps extend product shelf life.

When it comes to baking,  malted barley powder manufacturers advise you to use it in combination with wheat flour. For yeast risen goods, you can safely swap in up to 1/4 Malted Barley Flour; for non yeast-risen baked goods such as cookies, quick breads, up to 1/2. For recipes where there is no rising at all happening (e.g. using it as a thickener for gravies, soups, stews), you can use 100%.
