UNDERSTANDING THE SOUL OF BEER : MALT

 Malt undoubtedly is the soul of beer and many other alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages. Malt is a grain which is specially made for brewing or to be used as Barley Malt Powder, Malt extract liquid, Liquid MAlt Extract, Biscuit Confectionery Grade Malt Extract via the process of malting in which grains are soaked in the water and sugar is extracted from the grains.  The most common type of malt used in brewing is barley malt, but the list doesn’t end here. There are many other types of malt that can be/are used in brewing and various other recipes to give sweet essence and nutty flavour to your product:

Barley Malt - 

Barley Malt is one of the most commonly used malt which is a wonderful package of proteins, vitamins, enzymes, starch etc. Barley Malt powder or barley malt liquid is used in beer manufacturing, baking industry, biscuit and confectionery industry for providing brown colouring and malty flavour.

Wheat Malt -

Wheat malt provides a distinctive sweet, malty, caramel and wheat flour flavour to the product. Wheat malt is usually used in milkshakes, beer and whiskey.

Pale Ale Malt - 

When malt is made from 2-row spring barley then it is known as pale ale malt and it is slightly darker than pale malt. It provides clean maltiness , toastiness and nutty flavour to beer. Its colour is usually light to medium gold.

Crystal Malt - 

The main use of crystal malt is to enhance the colour of beer and also impacts the body, flavour and aroma of beer. It imparts caramel flavour and sweetness to the beer and other alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages.

Black Malt - 

Black malt is also known as Black patent malt which is known to be the grist component and is used majorly for the aroma flavour and colour of the drink. It gives a highly roasted flavour and is somehow bitter in taste.

Biscuit Malt -

It is comparatively a recent type of roasted malt, roasted at around 25-30° (light degree). It is made by roasting kiln-dried Ale malt gently. The sugar content in the malt biscuits are low, hence are healthy to consume.

Pilsner Malt - 

It is the type of malt made from two row spring barley. Pilsner malt is most commonly used in Helles, All lagers, Pilsner etc. Pilsners made with pilsner malts are known to have crispy taste, refreshing quality and are light in colour.
